New Sun People EP

Feb. 17, 2015

Sun People aka Simon/off just released a new EP on Moscow's Hyperboloid Records.

He did a Youtube playlist with some of his influences and gives us a little insight why those tunes have been important to him.

Winterstrand - Session4
Ok, this is going to be a bit self-referential for a second. Winterstrand was - and maybe still is - a project together with my brothers. We made a couple of albums in the early 2000's - basically for ourselves - and released them for free via various Netlabels. However, Sun People was never intentional touching those idm-ish vibes. Actually it was originally more raw, rough, maybe a bit jazzy. But it seems you can never deny your roots. They emerge from the ground just - when - you really let go. Funnily enough this tune was released 2005 on Kikapu - a netlabel from Springfield (Shouts to you Brad) the same label a guy called Stud released on. He should later rename himself to Pixelord, co-owner of Hyperboloid Rec.

Boards of Canada - Music is Math
A masterpiece - could have been almost any other tune from their catalog!

Squarepusher - The from Ernest Borgnine
Remember hearing this in the record shop for the first time. I think that whole album didn't left my turntable for days. This felt somehow old and familiar and chilled and futuristic and euphoric at the same time. It might have a bit of dust now - but back then this gave you the feeling that the future looks bright.

Alpha Omega - Sun People (Nubian Mindz Remix)
Colin Lindo is propably my most favorite producer ever. This tune is next level shhhhh. He's still delivering awesome music and is a constant inspiration to me, in many aspects of life. Mad respect

Tom & Jerry - ‪Maxi [Mum] Booty Style - Part III‬
I'm following the 4hero omnivers since '95. A friend from school gave me "Jacobs Optical Stairways" and i was hooked (Thanks Ludi!). This tune here under their Tom&Jerry moniker is actually the perfect Juke/jungle blueprint. 808's, Halftime claps, breakbeats, soulful samples - all in there. Ticklish from Berlin did a supernice bouncy re-rub of this in 2013. I then knew there is someone with the same spirit! And when he said he wanna do a remix for "You got me" I was more than happy!

Boylan - Bullet Proof Soul
I was following the Juke stuff from early 2010 on. But when i first heard this tune - the connection to Jungle seemed somehow obvious to me (maybe not to others). At this point i had not done anything around 160 for many years - but listening to this brought back some good memories and a certain feeling - and i instantly started working on some 160-orientated tunes.

Franjazzco - @disko404
Franjazzco is like THE Juke guy in Austria, He's got the beats and the knowledge, he's a good friend, a fantastic DJ and part of my disko404 family. We first met in 2011 at IZC's place in Vienna, doing a radioshow on Sub.fm.  Couple of months later we released the Franjazzco/Sun People split 12" on disko404. Pretty sure it was the first ever Juke/footwork/Jungle vinyl in Austria. His new EP on TenToesTurbo is dope too.

Pharao Sanders - Astral Travelling
Jungle somehow opened up a whole universe of music to me. There've been so much different influences you could hear and extract from the 94/95/96 era.
This one is a bit of an obvious choice. As it was very prominently sampled by Photek for "Rings of Saturn". But it shows how you can take something as a starting point and then dive deeper into it. Still listening a lot to that late 60ies / early 70ies stuff. Also, a bit of music-history gives you the right foundation to build something on your own.

Hidden Agenda - Pressin On'
One of my all-time favs from the early Metalheadz Catalog. The beat-programming is just sick. I remember getting my head around this - figuring out what the hell those guys where doing. Contrary to many producers they once said it takes them months to finish their tunes. Always admired their almost scientific approach.

Isley Brothers - Footsteps in the dark
I'm still looking for as much original breakbeats as possible. Sampling from vinyl just gives me a different feel and a physical connection. Its also the never ending digging fever ;) ! Samples / certain snippets seem to get somehow a life of their own . You can follow them through the decades. Through different musical flavours and contexts.
Out to Fishstix who made a next-level Juke/jungle/Breakcore version based on this one.
